I've been through some pretty awful personal times, and although they were mainly awful, I look back now and see the very bright spots. At the time, part of my sadness was that I didn't see that God was helping me all that much, but every so often, he was there in a way that I don't see at all when things are going fine in general. I think of it like the Hebrews wandering in the desert. It's mostly bad and pointless, but there are those great moments worth writing about that make the whole process make sense. I've had several times when God has spoken to me directly and it's always during those times.

If the place you rent was never zoned to allow a living space then it is an illegal rental unit. Most communities have laws that do not allow the renting of illegal rental units. Landlords are not allowed to collect rent on illegal units. Allowing the landlord to collect rent would be allowing proceeds from an illegal activity.

I'm not sure what you have been paying for rent each month but I would stop payment on the check and go see a lawyer. If you have paid a substantial amount over the last 2 years he may take the case based on getting a percentage of the award. You should be able to get all the rent you have paid up to this point returned to you or at least get a judgment against the landlord and put a lean on his property.
