It depends on who you ask, I say yes. The more demand there are for eco friendly products the more they will be produced. We may not have reached the point where the earth is getting cleaner, but it is getting polluted less quickly. We all have to start somewhere, the more we change wasteful or toxic methods the better off we will be. I don't use CFL's to save the world I use them to reduce my electric bill, I eat a local organic or free range diet to reduce the immediate risks to my family, and by doing so I'm helping fund local farmers to expand their organic growing and their grass fed meats.
Each day we get to vote many times, every time we purchased, use or consume something that was made in a sustainable way we are telling manufacturers that we want a better cleaner world. They can't do it if it isn't profitable, a companies purpose is to make money, lets help them do what's right for them and for us. Each time we make a better choice and someone see's us doing it we are helping change the world.

Almost any business that expands to something the scope of Walmart will eventually fail just because of its sheer size and complexity. If anything at the current time, they should be used as a model for other businesses to emulate. Their distribution system is the best in the world. Yes, they negotiate ruthlessly and probably force small operations out of business, but that is the unfortunate part of free enterprise. I think it's good that you're transferring to another college in the fall, if you weren't I'd be worried, that way you won't have to deal with your mum for the rest of your life. For the time being, I think you've just got to suck it up, I know it might kill you and you might hate it but just block her out and stay away from her as much as you can. You're doing good, I know how mom's can be, if you think it will help give her a serious talking to and tell her that her words effect you, but if not avoid her as much as possible and tell her a million times you're going back to school in the fall. We must put extra importance on decreasing carbon footprint as our inhabitants increases.
'Building without a carbon footprint' would refer to building things in a way that minimizes the use of fossil fuels.
Adding 'etc.' to that would imply building things in an environmentally friendly way (i.e. avoiding the use of toxic materials or even just avoiding damage to the construction area).
The term 'carbon footprint' itself usually refers to the amount of CO2 emitted by a certain person or process.
Since he said 'building' he was probably referring to the fact that you were talking about engineering to begin with. So 'building' in this case probably refers to whatever an engineer would build (could include actual buildings, but not necessarily). It could also include things that engineers build to help reduce the emission of CO2 (like solar panels, nuclear power plants or wind power plants).
The note he wrote probably says: 'sustainable engineering', which is just a general idea that encompasses building without a carbon footprint. In particular, it refers to a way of engineering such that we don't waste resources (i.e. could include building with recycled materials, or substituting harmful chemicals for non-toxic chemicals in some products etc.)
EDIT: I don't know any books off the top of my head. You can try looking around wikipedia (and the sources on each page) for things like; sustainable engineering, environmental engineering, carbon footprint, renewable energy etc. There's also an interesting documentary called: "The End of Suburbia", which talks about a concept called 'peak oil' and the implications of us NOT reducing our carbon footprint (although it's from a slightly different angle than usual, that is, it's not focused on global warming).

I personally enjoy the taste of Silk Soy Milk. I use vanilla flavored over my cereals and granolas but for cooking and non-sweet use I prefer the original Silk Light Soy Milk.

Almost everybody has a mobile-phone. But is it a great invention? I think there are both advantages and disadvantages.
The first advantage is that you can contact ANYONE EVEN IF he or she lives in another continent. It’s a very good way to carry on with a relationship, so you can keep in touch regularly. Nowadays mobile-phones have a great variety of functions: a camera, a calculator, a mp3 player…and little by little experts are making up more novelties. Also you can use it like an alarm clock. Don’t forget you WILL never be bored with this apparatus since you will always be busy pretending to find out something new about it, it COULD BE made into a funny game.
On the other hand there ARE also some disadvantages. If you have a mobile phone, you will never rest because it’s impossible to be ISOLATED, unless you switch it off. BUT it sometimes could be useless. For instance, a mobile phone without battery or range couldn’t be used.
In conclusion, from my point of view a mobile phone is one of the best INVENTIONS of THE PRESENT TIME. Without it a lot of families would lose touch. The disadvantages are insignificant compared with the positive things.

If you are going to paint on a canvas substrate (any type of material that you use to paint or draw on) then I suggest you use acrylic paint. It dries quickly, so you will have to spray your palette often, and you could use an extender base medium to slow down the drying process, but use it very sparingly. It can separate the pigment structure, and create a problem with the outcome of your painting.
The structure of tempura paint becomes chalkier when dry, and it has a tendency to flake off. It will rub off when touched. The problem with tempura and water colors is that both of them do not like to have multiple layers of pigment built up on each other because of the chalky characteristics of the medium base; it has a tendency to lift the dried pigment below the new wet paint application, and creates a hole in that area of the painting.
You can fix the problem with a lot of skill that is developed through time working with the medium. The best way to accomplish this is to use more of a dry brush application technique to lay down the pigment in the “hole” area only. You will have to keep the brush as dry as possible with only enough moisture on it to lay down the pigment. Tempura paint structure is best done on a cotton fibered paper.
FYI: Use only professional grade paint to do any art work.
Gauche has a nice paint structure that is best done on illustration board or gessoed wood because it will crack on a substrate that is pliable like paper. Any give in the substrate structure creates an unstable environment for this rigid paint structures. Many other paint mediums like oils, acrylic, etc. have a pliable characteristic quality to their structure, which allows some movement within the substrate without destruction happening to the painting.
The gauche can be layered without to much difficulty, and it leaves a nice shiny surface. Do not use too much water with the pigment or again the paint structure will dilute, and give you a milky glaze that distorts the under painted surface, and leaves an undesirable look to the work.
Personally, I would recommend the acrylic paint for a beginner because it takes some understanding about the paint quality of the other two choices list in this question. Acrylic is somewhat forgiving, but it dries to fast, as all three of these paints do. If it does dry to fast then you can paint over it without any problems. Also, if the paint builds up to high from numerous paint applications then you can use the palette knife to scrap off the excess, and repaint it.

Honestly, first thing I would do is go on a search engine (like Google) and type in a very generic description of your idea. Like if for example your idea was for a printer that refilled it's own ink cartridges, you would type something like "printer self refill ink" or "printer automatic ink refill" and just see what comes up. Check around for a little while and just see if there are any products out there already featuring your idea.
Then I would research online and see if there was a reputable company that was involved with new inventions, or in your case innovations (because your idea is a revision of an existing product, so it is an innovation).
Those guys that advertise with cavemen on tv probably aren't too reliable, but online you may even be able to find a business and also locate ratings by individuals who have dealt with them before.

Any time you do a task you have the potential of emitting CO2 to the atmosphere. That is the type of carbon consumption that is usually associated with the term "carbon footprint."
Let's say you chose to erect a small building using field stones that you found in a field. You did all of the work by hand with no tools, no wood, no steel, just field stones and your labor. That is just about as small a footprint as you can get. But if you think about it, you are breathing and emitting CO2 so even then there is a footprint.
Bottom line, I don't think you can do anything without having some type of carbon footprint even if it is very small. Of course on a typical building there are carbon emissions from the manufacture, transportation and installation of all of the materials. There are also emissions from the workers cars, the preparation of their food, the tools they need and the machines they use on the job. If you break down the work on a building and take each piece back up the chain you will see that even a single nail takes a lot of steps to end up being driven into a frame.

I'm sorry you are going through this and have no emotional support. I know how you feel. I havent been in the exact same situation but my mom is pretty mean too and nothing is ever lived up to expectation. The best advice I can give you, is to find a school you like and apply for financial aid. My school supplies me with full tuition paid and $1500 per quarter. This may help you afford to live on your own, even if you can only afford a studio. Just remember that when your filling it out, even though you are currently living with your mom, you have to say that you arent or they will account her income and probably deny you financial aid. The best way is to just wear them. If you can't fit your foot into them, then sometimes you can grab the part that covers your heel in one hand and the main part of the shoe in the other and pull on them a little. I did that with a pair of dress shoes, and then I could get my foot in them. Once I did that, I could wear them just fine.
I hear what you are saying…all of my mom's dogs eat Walmart Special Kitty cat Food and Purina Cat Food, Alley Cat…foods like that and she has two 19 year old cats and one 18 year old cat. One of their dogs lived to be 21 and he ate the bottom of the line dog food all his life.
I'm not knocking those that spend a fortune on pet foods. Too each their own. I do know that I was feeding top of the line cat food and one of my siamese kept getting UTI's. I went back to Purina and he hasn't had one since.

I'm sure that people may think of me as selfish, too, however, it doesn't make sense to have our government place the burdens of their self-absorbed idealism on the backs of American Taxpayers.
I'm with you, there may be a time when help is needed, but too many people have used a temporary solution, such as, Food Stamps and other Assistance Programs, and use these means as a permanent way of life. I really don't care if people think of me as being selfish, but the ones who are really selfish are those without pride, the absolute dregs of our society, who continue their existence by leeching off honest hardworking Americans.
Reform Is Necessary!
If the government had any sense they would not allow for people to become permanently dependent on such welfare programs, because this would allow working ethics to suffer. A good start would be for the government to implement limitation statutes on "all" welfare assistance and/or entitlement programs. For example, a person who is eligible can only receive such benefits for a maximum of 6 months, in a 5 year cycle, starting from the date they first became eligible. This would be more than enough time needed to find a job. It would be possible to qualify for an additional 6-months benefits, however, these instances are rare, and only allowed under extreme circumstances and must be repaid in full within 1 year after the date that the last payment of loan benefits are received, and is subject to payroll deductions.
